Crosswind Landing Technique — A Pilot's Guide

Few skills separate confident pilots from nervous ones like the crosswind landing. The aircraft wants to drift, the runway is not where the nose is pointing, and the margin for a sloppy flare shrinks. Why crosswinds are tricky

In a crosswind, the wind pushes the aircraft sideways relative to the runway. If you simply point the nose down the centreline, you drift off to the side. The whole task is to track the centreline while keeping the aircraft aligned for touchdown.

Method 1 — the wing-low (sideslip)

In the wing-low method, you lower the upwind wing slightly with aileron to stop the drift, and use opposite rudder to keep the nose straight down the runway. You fly the whole approach in this cross-controlled slip, touching down on the upwind main wheel first. It gives a stable, aligned picture all the way to the flare.

Method 2 — the crab and kick

In the crab method, you point the nose into the wind (the “crab”) to track the centreline, then just before touchdown you “kick” the nose straight with rudder and lower the upwind wing to prevent drift. It keeps the approach comfortable, with the alignment happening in the final moments. Many pilots blend the two: crab on final, transition to wing-low for the flare.

Common mistakes

  • Removing the crab too early or too late.
  • Not holding aileron into the wind after touchdown.
  • Letting the nosewheel touch first instead of the upwind main.
  • Fixating on the nose instead of looking down the runway.

Aircraft-specific tips

Light aircraft like the Cessna 172 respond well to the wing-low method and need positive aileron held after landing. Large jets typically fly a crab and de-crab in the flare, as a deep slip is limited by engine and gear clearance. Always fly your aircraft’s published technique.
