Tajikistan has welcomed its first Boeing 737 MAX. Somon Air, the country's largest carrier, took delivery of a 737-8 on Monday, August 3, 2026, marking the debut of the type in the Central Asian nation and a significant step in the airline's fleet modernisation.
The aircraft is a CFM LEAP-1B-powered Boeing 737-8, leased from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise. It is the first of two 737-8s Somon Air is taking from the lessor, with the second aircraft expected to arrive by the end of August.
Somon Air said the new jets would enter service on existing routes immediately, before enabling a planned expansion of its network. The airline has identified Seoul and London among its longer-term route ambitions, alongside additional services to destinations including Beijing, Minsk and Guangzhou. According to the carrier, the improved range and economics of the 737-8 are central to that plan, given Tajikistan's central geographic position and the aircraft's fuel efficiency.
The airline expects the 737 MAX to cut fuel use and carbon emissions by roughly 20 percent compared with the older aircraft it replaces, a typical generational improvement for re-engined narrowbodies. The 737-8 pairs the LEAP-1B engine with aerodynamic refinements such as the distinctive split-tip winglets that help lower fuel burn on the medium-haul sectors that make up the bulk of Somon Air's flying.
For a carrier of Somon Air's size, adding a modern, longer-legged narrowbody is about more than efficiency. The 737-8 offers the range to open new city pairs that were previously marginal or impossible with older equipment, which is why the airline is framing the delivery as a platform for growth rather than a straight one-for-one replacement.
The delivery also underscores the continued role of large leasing companies in placing new aircraft with airlines around the world. Dubai Aerospace Enterprise is among the biggest lessors globally, and deals like this allow smaller flag carriers to access the latest technology without the balance-sheet burden of outright purchases.
The Boeing 737 MAX family has steadily rebuilt its order book and global footprint in recent years, and each new operator broadens the type's reach. Tajikistan now joins the growing list of countries flying the aircraft, and Somon Air becomes the launch operator of the MAX in that market.
With the second 737-8 due within weeks, Somon Air is positioning itself to compete more aggressively on international routes from Dushanbe, leaning on the aircraft's efficiency and range to connect Tajikistan with a wider set of destinations across Asia and Europe.
