Boeing Quietly Boosts 777X Range in 2026 Spec Update

Boeing has raised the advertised range of the 777-8 and 777-9 with no formal announcement, adding hundreds of nautical miles to each.

Boeing has quietly rewritten the numbers on one of its most important future aircraft. Without any formal announcement, the manufacturer has raised the advertised range of both members of the 777X family β€” the 777-8 and the larger 777-9 β€” in an update that appears to have landed on its website between mid-June and early July 2026.

The headline change is on the 777-9, the stretched, higher-capacity variant that will anchor the family. Its advertised range has climbed to 8,000 nautical miles, up from the 7,285 nautical miles Boeing had long quoted β€” an increase of 715 nautical miles, or close to 10 percent. The smaller but longer-legged 777-8 received a similar bump, with its range rising to 9,500 nautical miles from 8,745 nautical miles, a gain of 755 nautical miles.

Passenger figures were revised too. Boeing now lists the 777-8 as carrying 350 to 425 travellers in a two-class layout, against a previous single figure of 395, while the 777-9 is quoted at 375 to 450 seats in two classes, changed from 426. Maximum take-off weight for the 777-9 appears unchanged at 352 tonnes β€” the same figure cited in a 2017 Boeing technical document β€” while the 777-8 is listed at 365 tonnes.

Range is one of the headline metrics airlines weigh when planning ultra-long-haul networks, so even a single-digit percentage gain can widen the map of city pairs an aircraft can serve non-stop. A longer-legged 777-8, in particular, is aimed squarely at the ultra-long-haul missions where it competes most directly with Airbus's A350-1000, and additional advertised range strengthens that pitch.

What makes the change unusual is the manner of its arrival. Boeing did not accompany the revision with a press release or technical briefing, and the figures simply shifted on the company's public specifications. As recently as June 17, 2026, the 777-8 and 777-9 were still listed with their older ranges of 8,745 and 7,285 nautical miles respectively, indicating the update was applied in the following weeks.

The 777X programme has endured years of delay, and the family is still working through certification. Against that backdrop, quietly improved paper performance will be welcomed by prospective operators, even if the real proof will come from flight-test and eventual in-service data. For now, Boeing's revised brochure gives the twinjet a longer reach on paper than it has ever advertised before.
