Pilots at Delta Air Lines say the Atlanta-based carrier has proposed major changes to their contract that amount to a “comprehensive attack” on scheduling rules and agreements built up over many years. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which represents Delta's flight crews, now says “all options are on the table” as it weighs its response.
The backdrop is that the existing three-year contract between the pilots and Delta becomes amendable in December. Rather than be drawn into months or even years of drawn-out bargaining after that date, ALPA had sought an accelerated negotiation aimed at making relatively modest updates — including pay rises and some benefit improvements — before the contract opened up.
According to the union, those talks are now showing serious signs of breaking down. ALPA said it was calling off the next round of bargaining, which had been due to begin on 10 August, and that its leadership would instead convene a special meeting to discuss next steps with all options under consideration.
In an internal memo shared with members, ALPA claimed Delta had “refused to meaningfully engage” on the issues that matter most to pilots, listing vacation, layover hotels, retirement provisions, commuter policies and travel benefits, alongside pay increases.
At the same time, the union alleges, Delta is “trying to gain broad scheduling concessions from the pilot group.” Among the changes the airline is said to be seeking are reversing reroute restrictions, rewriting reserve rules and making it harder for pilots to swap trips.
Delta's argument, as described by the union, is that such changes are needed to improve the airline's operational performance, which has been increasingly shaky over the last couple of years. ALPA rejects that reasoning, arguing that the very rules Delta now wants to change date back to a period when the carrier was widely praised as an “on-time machine.”
The dispute has a public dimension too. Last month ALPA told passengers in an open letter that the more than 17,000 pilots it represents at Delta shared their frustration over recent delays, cancellations and disrupted travel plans. With bargaining stalled and a special meeting looming, the coming weeks are likely to determine whether the two sides can return to the table or whether the standoff hardens further.
