Embraer has handed over the first C-390 Millennium transport aircraft to the Czech Air Force, marking the start of a new heavy-airlift capability for the country's armed forces. The delivery took place on July 16, 2026, during a ceremony at Prague's Kbely Air Base, just 20 months after the Czech Republic signed its acquisition agreement with the Brazilian manufacturer.
Embraer pointed to that turnaround — from contract signature to first aircraft in barely a year and a half — as evidence of its ability to move quickly against a customer's timeline. The C-390 is a twin-engine, multi-mission jet designed to carry heavy and oversized cargo over long distances and to take on roles ranging from troop and equipment transport to humanitarian relief.
The handover ceremony drew a number of senior Czech and Embraer figures, including Czech Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna; General Miroslav Hlaváč, Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces; General Petr Tománek, Commander of the Czech Air Force; and Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.
Brigadier General Jaroslav Falta, Commander of the 24th Air Transportation Base, said the C-390 will give the Czech Air Force a meaningful new ability to move heavy and oversized loads across long distances, supporting both NATO operations and domestic emergency response. He added that, while the aircraft itself is impressive, its real value comes down to the people trained to operate it.
Defense Minister Zůna echoed that view, describing the delivery as a milestone that strengthens the country's capacity to transport personnel and equipment when and where they are needed.
The C-390 Millennium has become Embraer's flagship in the military-transport market, where it competes against turboprop and jet designs from more established Western manufacturers. Its selling points are speed, a jet-powered cruise and a mission-flexible cabin, which advocates argue make it a modern alternative to older tactical airlifters still in widespread service across Europe.
For the Czech Republic, the aircraft is part of a broader modernisation of its air arm and a deeper alignment with NATO's transport and logistics needs. Member states have increasingly looked to shared and interoperable airlift as a way to move forces and aid quickly across the continent, and a jet like the C-390 slots directly into that thinking.
The delivery also continues Embraer's push to widen the C-390's operator base beyond its earliest customers. Each new air force that adopts the type strengthens the case for a common support and training ecosystem — the kind of network effect that has long benefited more established transport programs.
