Emirates Begins $5 Billion Cabin Refresh On 60 Airbus A380s From August 2026 β€” New Lounge Seats 26 And Updated Suites

Emirates kicks off a $5B program to refit 60 Airbus A380s starting August 2026, including a redesigned onboard lounge for up to 26 passengers and fully updated cabins.

Emirates has confirmed that its $5 billion fleet retrofit program will begin reshaping 60 Airbus A380 superjumbos from August 2026, with each aircraft receiving a completely redesigned upper-deck onboard lounge alongside fully updated First, Business, and Premium Economy cabins.

The centerpiece of the refresh is the new A380 lounge, which has been re-engineered to accommodate up to 26 passengers simultaneously β€” a meaningful expansion over the current configuration. The space borrows design cues from the Dubai airline's flagship First Class suites, featuring darker materials, warmer ambient lighting, and a horseshoe-shaped bar redesigned for both standing socializing and seated dining.

The program is part of a longer-running cabin modernization effort that already covers 220 aircraft across Emirates' Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 fleets. The carrier confirmed earlier in 2026 that the $5 billion investment is the largest cabin retrofit in commercial aviation history, dwarfing comparable programs at British Airways, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines.

Each A380 will spend roughly two to three months out of service during the refit, with work performed at Emirates Engineering in Dubai. The carrier has staggered the schedule across multiple bays to ensure no more than four A380s are out of revenue service simultaneously.

Importantly, the program runs in parallel with Emirates' rollout of SpaceX Starlink connectivity, which is being installed across the entire Emirates fleet as the airline standardizes its connectivity stack. Starlink delivers roughly 10 times the bandwidth of legacy Ka-band satellite systems and will be offered free to all passengers regardless of cabin class.

The refresh comes as Qatar Airways prepares to debut its next-generation Qsuite on the Boeing 777-9, intensifying the long-running premium cabin arms race between the two Gulf carriers. With Emirates choosing to refresh its existing A380s rather than wait for replacement widebodies, the airline is betting that the superjumbo will remain its premium showcase well into the 2030s.
