Japan Airlines is deepening its partnership with Malaysia Airlines in a new phase of cooperation centered on the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, as the two carriers prepare for Malaysia Airlines' new Fukuoka-Kuala Lumpur route.
The route launches on September 2, 2026, with Malaysia Airlines operating five weekly round trips using Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Ahead of that debut, JAL began selling seats on the service through a codeshare arrangement starting August 7, 2026. The codeshare flights are marketed as MH57/JL7099 from Fukuoka to Kuala Lumpur and MH56/JL7098 from Kuala Lumpur to Fukuoka, giving both airlines' customers access to the new link.
The tie-up reaches beyond a single route. Malaysia Airlines will add its airline code to JAL-operated domestic flights connecting to and from Fukuoka Airport, a step designed to give inbound travelers smoother onward connections across Japan's domestic network. JAL frames the effort as reinforcing Fukuoka's role as an international gateway, channeling overseas visitors into the wider region rather than routing them solely through the country's largest hubs.
That regional focus is central to the strategy. JAL described the Fukuoka initiative as the second phase of a broader push to bring international visitors directly into Japan's regional destinations, part of the JAL Group's support for the Japanese government's goal of attracting 60 million international visitors by 2030. By linking regional airports with its global network and partner airlines, the carrier says it aims to create economic and social value for local communities as part of its long-term sustainability goals.
To mark the launch, JAL is running a Double Miles Campaign for members of its JAL Mileage Bank loyalty program. Members who register during the campaign and fly on eligible flights earn a 100% bonus on top of their regular flight miles. Registration runs from August 7 through October 31, 2026, and covers travel between September 2, 2026 and March 31, 2027. The offer is open to members from any region but applies only to flights JL7098 and JL7099 between Fukuoka and Kuala Lumpur, booked under JL flight numbers, with some booking classes excluded.
Codeshare bookings became available through JAL's official website on August 7, 2026. The airline cautioned that all schedules and operations remain subject to government approval and may still change.
For Malaysia Airlines, the Fukuoka service adds a fresh point to its Japan network and a partner willing to feed traffic onto it from across the Japanese domestic system. For JAL, the arrangement supports a national tourism agenda while extending its reach into Southeast Asia through a long-standing partner. Codeshares of this kind let carriers widen their effective route maps and sell connections they do not operate themselves, an increasingly common tool as airlines chase inbound demand into secondary cities rather than concentrating it in a handful of major gateways.
