A Florida man is facing criminal charges after allegedly scaling a perimeter fence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and climbing aboard a parked JetBlue aircraft, where he was later found asleep inside the cabin.
According to authorities, Samuel Prescott Lackey of Fort Lauderdale gained access to the airfield in the early hours of Sunday, August 2, 2026, by climbing over a barbed-wire security fence. He then used a set of portable airstairs to board a JetBlue jet that was parked overnight at the Jetscape maintenance facility, away from the passenger terminals.
Lackey was not discovered immediately. Investigators say he was found hours later hiding in a lavatory on the aircraft, having apparently fallen asleep on board. He was taken into custody and now faces charges that include criminal mischief and burglary of an occupied conveyance. He was being held on a $10,000 bond.
The intrusion was not without cost to the airline. Police said the disruption resulted in more than $2,400 in expenses tied to the affected aircraft, and the incident is being examined by the Broward County Aviation Department, the Transportation Security Administration and the FBI.
The aircraft involved was a JetBlue Airbus A320, one of the workhorse narrowbodies that form the backbone of the carrier's fleet. Because the jet was parked at a maintenance area rather than at an active gate, it was not preparing for a passenger flight at the time, but a security breach of this kind still triggers a review of how someone was able to reach the ramp and board an aircraft undetected.
Perimeter security at large U.S. airports relies on a combination of fencing, surveillance, access controls and patrols, and unauthorized incursions onto the airfield are treated seriously by regulators. Even when no flight is disrupted and no one is hurt, incidents in which an individual reaches an aircraft can prompt questions about monitoring and response times, particularly at facilities where jets are parked overnight for maintenance.

In this instance, officials emphasized that the aircraft was on the ground and unoccupied by passengers or crew, and that the man was detained without further incident.
JetBlue has not detailed any changes to security procedures at the maintenance site as a result of the episode. The investigation by federal and local authorities was ongoing at the time of reporting, and the case underscores the continued focus airports place on securing aircraft even when they are well away from the terminal.
