Southwest Drops Nine Baltimore Routes Including Oakland, O’Hare And Los Cabos

Southwest Airlines has shelved nine Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) destinations when its January 2025–September 2026 network is compared with schedules from October 2026 onward, according to Cirium data reported by Simple Flying—even as the carrier remains overwhelmingly the largest airline at the Maryland hub.

Two corridors disappeared last year. Baltimore–Oakland (OAK) ended in March 2025, and Baltimore–Chicago O’Hare (ORD) followed in November 2025 as Southwest exited O’Hare entirely in favor of Midway (MDW). The airline told CBS News that O’Hare “continues to be challenging” and that it prefers to serve Chicagoland from its Midway stronghold.

Seven more BWI routes fell in 2026. Domestic cuts included Colorado Springs (COS), Long Beach (LGB) and Jackson (JAN), each last served early in the year, plus Oklahoma City (OKC), Ontario (ONT) and Pensacola (PNS), which Cirium shows ending in August 2026. The sole international withdrawal was Los Cabos (SJD), last operated in April 2026; United is separately planning Dulles–Los Cabos flying from October.

Load factors on the three August exits sat near or above the BWI system average: Cirium logged 84.12% on Oklahoma City, 71.15% on Ontario and 76.67% on Pensacola for the 12 months ending June 2026, against a 75.98% average across Southwest’s Baltimore network. That underscoring that Southwest is pruning for network fit, not only empty cabins.

Even after the cuts, Southwest’s November 2026 BWI schedule still dwarfs every rival: about 6,116 departures versus 519 for Delta, 445 for American, 398 for Frontier and 351 for United, or roughly 75% of the airport’s 8,180 flights that month. Equipment mix is classic Southwest—2,623 Boeing 737 MAX 8 departures, 2,081 on the 737-700 and 1,412 on the 737-800—with Orlando (MCO) as the top destination at up to 12 daily flights and San Francisco as the longest haul at 2,457 miles.

For travelers, the takeaway is sharper rather than smaller: Baltimore remains a Southwest fortress, but the map no longer stretches to Oakland, O’Hare, Colorado Springs, Long Beach, Jackson, Los Cabos, Oklahoma City, Ontario or Pensacola. Competing carriers at DCA, IAD and MDW now absorb pieces of that demand while Southwest concentrates BWI metal on its strongest Florida and coast-to-coast trunks.

Reading the nine withdrawals as a single Baltimore story would miss Southwest’s wider O’Hare exit and its Florida-heavy BWI fortress strategy. Oakland and Long Beach cuts also echo California network churn, while Los Cabos hands a leisure Mexico lane to competitors at Dulles. Jackson and Pensacola sit closer to regional leisure and VFR flows that other carriers can cover from DCA.

Cirium’s load-factor snapshot for the August trio is useful precisely because it is not catastrophic. Oklahoma City’s mid-80s loads show Southwest will drop a solid-performing spoke when the broader network math—crew bases, overnight positions, connecting banks—says the aircraft earns more elsewhere. Ontario’s lower 71% figure fits a Southern California market already thick with Southwest and other ULCC options.

Travelers who still need those city pairs should look first at Midway for Chicago, Dulles or National for some domestic alternatives, and United’s planned IAD–Los Cabos service for Baja California Sur. Inside BWI itself, the story is concentration: Southwest keeps three-quarters of the airport’s November departures and floods Orlando, leaving the nine withdrawn spokes as historical footnotes on an otherwise intact Mid-Atlantic fortress.
