United Grounds Premium 787-9 In London After TCAS Fault

United Airlines’ newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner — the flagship of the carrier’s premium long-haul push — has been grounded again, this time in London, after a recurring problem with its collision-avoidance system forced the cancellation of a transatlantic flight.

The aircraft, registered N61101, carries United’s new Polaris Studio suites and the airline’s “United Elevate” premium interior. On Friday, its scheduled return service from London Heathrow (LHR) to San Francisco (SFO) was cancelled after issues with the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System, known as TCAS.

The Dreamliner had only just returned to service. According to reports, it came back from Boeing’s facility at Moses Lake on Tuesday, June 30, operated a domestic rotation to Houston, and then flew to London on July 2. The outbound leg to Heathrow — departing San Francisco on Thursday evening at 7:54 PM and arriving in the UK roughly 10 hours later at 1:55 PM — operated without major disruption. But the 6:15 PM return departure was scrubbed after the TCAS system acted up once again.

TCAS is a safety-critical system that warns pilots of nearby aircraft and issues resolution advisories to avoid mid-air conflicts, and it must be fully serviceable for an airliner to be dispatched. The system has reportedly plagued this particular jet, with the collision-avoidance equipment repeatedly failing; both antennas were said to have been replaced during an earlier visit to Boeing.

This is not the aircraft’s first setback. United pulled its first 787-9 fitted with the “United Elevate” interior out of service and sent it back to Boeing in June 2026 after weeks of repeated technical faults that its own maintenance teams could not resolve. The latest London cancellation suggests that whatever is troubling the Dreamliner has not yet been fully diagnosed.

The timing is awkward for United. The carrier has staked a significant part of its premium-cabin strategy on this configuration, using the Polaris Studio suites and refreshed Elevate interior as a showcase for high-yield international travelers. Each grounding not only disrupts the specific rotation but also chips away at confidence in an aircraft meant to headline the airline’s long-haul upgrade.

For now, the jet remains on the ground in London while engineers work through the fault. New-build Dreamliners occasionally suffer early teething problems, but a repeat failure on a safety-critical system is the kind of issue that tends to keep an aircraft parked until it can be reliably cleared — and, in this case, has already sent the flagship back to its manufacturer once.
