United Opens San Francisco–Sapporo New Chitose on Boeing 787-9 From December 11

United Airlines will open the first US mainland nonstop to Sapporo New Chitose Airport on December 11, 2026, flying San Francisco–Sapporo three times weekly on the Boeing 787-9, according to Simple Flying on September 30, 2026. The new link targets Hokkaido’s winter ski and festival season and gives United a Pacific leisure spoke that bypasses Tokyo Haneda and Narita for travelers heading straight to Japan’s northern island.

Cirium-based tables cited by Simple Flying list UA234 from San Francisco at 10:30 arriving New Chitose at 14:15 the next day, and UA235 returning at 16:15 local for an 08:20 same-day San Francisco arrival, with a great-circle distance of about 4,811 miles and westbound block time near 10 hours 45 minutes. Aircraft type is the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on both legs at three weekly frequencies.

United already dominates Pacific revenue versus Delta on a network basis, Simple Flying notes, and SFO–CTS extends that SFO hub franchise into a powder-snow market that previously required a Tokyo connection for most US mainland passengers. Air Canada is separately starting Vancouver–New Chitose ahead of United’s launch, so Hokkaido will see two North American nonstops into the same winter window rather than a United monopoly.

Product on the 787-9 will be the usual United long-haul mix with Polaris business, Premium Plus and economy. For California and West Coast connectors, the nonstop removes a Tokyo terminal change in winter weather—an operational plus when snow and wind already complicate Hokkaido arrivals. East Coast passengers will still connect over San Francisco, adding a domestic bank before the Pacific leg.

Hokkaido’s draw is explicit: Niseko and Rusutsu ski resorts, Sapporo Snow Festival timing in February, and culinary tourism. United’s December launch puts metal on the route before peak festival weeks, then sustains three weekly flights through the heart of the ski season if the file holds. Frequency remains modest versus daily Tokyo services, so loads will depend on premium leisure yield rather than connecting volume alone.

Government and schedule caveats still apply on any new Pacific city pair. Travelers should confirm December 11 and subsequent dates in United’s booking system, because Pacific winter schedules can still flex. What Simple Flying’s September 30 report establishes is a dated SFO–CTS launch on the 787-9 at three weekly, positioned as the first US mainland nonstop into New Chitose.

Aviation Shop will watch whether United adds a fourth weekly frequency mid-winter or keeps the route tightly seasonal. For now, San Francisco–Sapporo is the clearest new United Pacific leisure launch on the near-term board, timed for Japow season and festival traffic rather than a year-round Tokyo-style trunk.

New Chitose sits as Hokkaido’s primary international gateway, with ground links into Sapporo and the Niseko corridor that US ski charter programs have long used via Tokyo. Cutting the Tokyo connection saves winter irregular-ops risk: a missed Haneda bank in a snow event no longer strands an entire Hokkaido itinerary.

United’s three-weekly pattern is a classic leisure probe—enough to build awareness and Polaris yield, light enough to pull if Japow demand disappoints. Competitive pressure from Air Canada’s Vancouver–CTS start means United cannot assume all North American Hokkaido traffic will funnel through SFO; western Canada and Seattle catchment may prefer the shorter YVR hop.

Beyond skiers, Sapporo’s February snow festival and Hokkaido food tourism give United a second shoulder inside the same winter file. If December–March loads work, the commercial question for 2027–28 becomes whether the route earns a fourth weekly or a longer season rather than remaining a pure powder-season experiment.
