Wizz Air is deepening its already substantial footprint in Romania. On August 12, 2026, the ultra-low-cost carrier confirmed it will open a new base at Braşov-Ghimbav International Airport (GHV), establishing what will become its tenth base in the country.
The airline said it will station one of its Airbus A321neo aircraft at the centrally located airport. That based jet will anchor the launch of four new routes, all scheduled to begin in December 2026.
From Braşov, Wizz Air plans to connect the city to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (FKB) in Germany, Chişinău (RMO) in Moldova, and two major Spanish destinations, Barcelona (BCN) and Madrid (MAD). The route mix reflects the carrier's familiar strategy of blending links toward Western and Central Europe with leisure-oriented services to the Mediterranean.
Braşov itself is not new territory for the airline. Wizz Air has served the city from several of its other bases since 2023, the same year the greenfield Braşov-Ghimbav airport opened for commercial traffic. Basing an aircraft locally, however, marks a meaningful step up. A resident jet lets the airline fly the first and last rotations of the day out of Braşov, which typically improves aircraft utilization and gives local travelers earlier departures and later returns than a route flown from a distant base.
For a fast-growing airport at the center of Romania, a based aircraft is also a signal of confidence. Local bases tend to bring incremental crew and ground jobs and can encourage further network growth if the initial routes perform well.
The choice of the Airbus A321neo is consistent with Wizz Air's low-cost model. The type is the largest member of the A320neo family and pairs high seating density with the fuel efficiency of new-generation engines, characteristics that suit the airline's emphasis on low unit costs across point-to-point European flying.
Wizz Air has built one of the largest low-cost networks in Central and Eastern Europe, and Romania has long been one of its most important markets. Adding a tenth Romanian base underscores how central the country remains to the airline's expansion plans, even as it continues to add capacity elsewhere across the region.
The four inaugural Braşov routes are due to begin in December 2026. As with any new base, the pace of further additions will depend on how strongly demand develops once the initial services are up and running.
