Wizz Air has officially opened its newest Italian base at Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport in Sicily, launching operations with two based Airbus A321neo aircraft and announcing that a third jet will follow just weeks later in response to stronger-than-expected demand.
The base was inaugurated on 3 August during a ceremony attended by Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla, marking a significant expansion of the ultra-low-cost carrier's footprint in southern Italy. Alongside the new base, Wizz Air confirmed six additional routes to be served from Palermo, broadening the range of destinations available to travellers in western Sicily.
Basing aircraft at an airport, rather than simply serving it with inbound flights, allows a low-cost carrier to schedule early-morning departures, improve aircraft utilisation and build local connectivity more efficiently. The decision to add a third A321neo so soon after opening points to robust demand on the routes Wizz has identified from the Sicilian capital.
The Airbus A321neo is central to Wizz Air's growth strategy. As the largest member of the A320neo family, it offers more than 230 seats in the airline's high-density single-class layout, delivering a very low cost per seat that underpins Wizz's aggressive fare positioning across Europe.
Italy has become one of Wizz Air's most important markets, with the carrier steadily building bases and route networks across the country in competition with other low-cost operators. Palermo strengthens the airline's presence in the south, a region that combines strong leisure demand with significant traffic from Sicilians living and working elsewhere in Europe.
