American Airlines Adds 14 Chicago O’Hare Routes Including Daily Tokyo Narita Boeing 787-9 Flights

American Airlines is stacking a wave of new Chicago O’Hare flying across 2026 and 2027, and Cirium schedule data now points to at least 14 route additions that mix regional jets, mainline domestic markets, and a long-haul Pacific return aimed squarely at United’s hub advantage.

The headline piece is daily Chicago–Tokyo Narita service on a Boeing 787-9. American’s newsroom said the Dreamliner would become its eleventh long-haul destination from O’Hare and would feed Japan Airlines connections beyond Narita to cities such as Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, and Ho Chi Minh City under the carriers’ Pacific joint business. CEO Robert Isom called the route a commitment to keep Chicago competitive on the world stage.

American last flew O’Hare–Narita in early 2020, so the restart is both a schedule and a symbolism play. United has already filed its own Chicago–Narita 787 flying from October 24, 2026, which means travelers will briefly see overlapping metal before American’s March start. Traicy later reported American moved its launch forward to March 19, 2027, listing AA153 and AA154 on a standard 787-9 cabin with 30 Flagship Business and 21 Premium Economy seats rather than the denser Flagship Suite layout.

Ten of the Cirium-tracked additions are regional, which fits how O’Hare leads the world in aircraft movements. American Eagle opened Lewisburg and Shenandoah on SkyWest CRJs in February 2026, added Tri-Cities and Allentown on Envoy Embraer E170s in the spring, then layered Erie, Lincoln, and Marion with SkyWest metal through September. South Bend is due in October, Charlottesville in November, and Harlingen in December, extending the feeder map into smaller Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic cities that fill connecting banks.

Mainline domestic growth is thinner but more strategic. American operated a short Super Bowl burst to San Jose on 737-800s, and Cirium lists Maui and Ontario among the longer-term O’Hare adds. American’s Tokyo release separately flagged Charlottesville and Ontario as winter 2026 network extensions, pairing the Pacific story with two domestic cities that restore previously dropped O’Hare links.

Hub rivalry is the subtext. American has also been fighting for O’Hare gate capacity while United densifies 787 flying and lounge investment. A Tokyo nonstop gives American a Japan Airlines partnership story and a premium cabin to sell against United’s earlier Narita return, even if JAL’s own Chicago schedules mean the market is not empty.

Whether Tokyo earns its keep will depend on premium loads, cargo, and beyond-Narita connect rates, not only on matching United city for city. Regional jets will do the quieter work of keeping O’Hare’s movement count high while the Dreamliner carries the marketing.

For passengers, the near-term calendar is clearer than the politics. More American Eagle spokes arrive this autumn and winter, Ontario and Charlottesville join the domestic map, and the Pacific long-haul date now sits in March 2027 on 787-9 product timed for JAL Asia connections.

Simple Flying’s September 20 roundup is what pulled the fourteen-route Cirium tally into one place; American’s own July newsroom note and Traicy’s mid-September schedule tweak supply the Tokyo hardware and date detail behind that list.
