Delta A319 Struck By Firework Landing At Chicago Midway

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 was struck by a firework as it descended toward Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) on the evening of July 4, 2026. The narrowbody, operating Flight DL1076 from Delta's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) hub, was at roughly 200 feet on final approach when the crew reported a sudden impact at around 8:40 PM. The aircraft landed safely moments later, with no injuries reported among the passengers or crew.

According to recordings from LiveATC, the flight crew told the tower they had been hit. "We just heard a bang on the plane, so we'll have to look at it when we get to the gate," one pilot radioed. "We're just hoping it was just a mortar that went off underneath, but definitely felt a big bang." The crew elected to continue the approach rather than declare an emergency, and the A319 touched down without further incident.

The timing was no coincidence. It was the Fourth of July β€” and a particularly notable one, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The Midway tower told the Delta crew there had been "multiple" reports of fireworks in the area that evening. The aircraft involved carried the registration N316NB.

Delta pulled the jet from service for inspection after landing. A spokesperson said the aircraft "reportedly made contact with a firework while on descent," adding that it was "under evaluation." It was not immediately clear whether the A319 had sustained any damage or how long it would remain on the ground.

How Much Of A Threat Are Fireworks To Airliners?

Direct firework strikes on commercial aircraft are rare. Most reported incidents involve a firework detonating in the vicinity of an aircraft rather than making contact with it, and the risk of significant airframe damage is generally low. Even so, such events are taken seriously for several reasons.

Fireworks tend to appear during takeoff and landing β€” the most critical phases of flight β€” where a sudden flash or bang can startle, distract, or momentarily impair a flight crew. There is also the hazard of foreign object debris on runways and taxiways, which can threaten other aircraft and often prompts airfield sweeps after a reported strike. In a worst-case scenario, a direct hit could cause structural damage or an engine ingestion.

There have been other recent close calls in the United States. In November 2025, a JetBlue Airbus A320 on final approach to New York JFK reported a firework passing about 100 feet below it. In April 2026, an easyJet flight approaching Paris Orly was forced to abort its landing after a wedding procession set off fireworks in its path.

A Record Holiday Travel Weekend

The incident unfolded during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The Transportation Security Administration said it expected to screen nearly 18.7 million travelers nationwide between June 30 and July 6, while Chicago's aviation authorities forecast close to 1.95 million passengers across the city's two airports over the holiday rush.

Chicago Midway alone was projected to handle around 325,000 passengers during the period, with almost 40,000 passing through on July 4 itself. For the crew and passengers of Flight DL1076, the holiday delivered an unexpected jolt on the way down β€” one that ended, fortunately, with a safe arrival at the gate.
