Etihad Opens First Middle East Link to Calgary With Boeing 787-9 Flights From October 25

Etihad Airways will launch nonstop flights between Abu Dhabi and Calgary on Sunday, 25 October 2026, opening the first scheduled passenger service between the Middle East and the Canadian province of Alberta. The route starts on the first day of the IATA winter season and will run four times a week with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, Simple Flying reported.

Calgary becomes Etihad's second Canadian destination, joining Toronto Pearson. Toronto is also the only North American city that currently sees Etihad's Airbus A380.

Schedule and aircraft

Flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. EY29 is scheduled to leave Abu Dhabi at 02:25 and reach Calgary at 07:00 local time, a block time of 14 hours and 35 minutes. The return, EY30, departs Calgary at 13:00 and lands in Abu Dhabi at 12:55 the following day after 13 hours and 55 minutes.

Etihad will use its 303-seat 787-9 layout, the most economy-heavy of the three configurations it flies on the type. It has 32 business class seats in a 1-2-1 arrangement and 271 economy seats in a 3-3-3 layout with a 31-inch pitch. According to ch-aviation data cited by Simple Flying, Etihad operates 35 787-9s, making it the airline's most numerous widebody.

The route covers 6,243 nautical miles (11,562 km) on a great-circle basis, making it Etihad's fourth-longest route to North America by distance and sixth-longest by scheduled time. Calgary's high elevation reduces takeoff performance with a heavy load, so a payload restriction may be needed on the return leg to Abu Dhabi.

Built around connections

The timing is designed for transfer traffic. The 02:25 departure is part of Etihad's largest bank of flights to North America, fed by large numbers of services from Asia and especially India, which Simple Flying expects to be critical for the new market. The roughly six-hour turnaround in Calgary means the return flight reaches Abu Dhabi at 12:55, when the hub receives its biggest wave of arrivals from the United States and Canada, again to maximise onward connections.

Etihad grows in North America

OAG data for November 2026 shows Etihad planning 57 weekly departures to North America, or seven to nine a day. That makes it the third-largest Middle Eastern carrier to the continent, behind Emirates from Dubai with 119 weekly services and Qatar Airways from Doha with 98. Thanks to Calgary and other changes, Etihad is the only one of the three whose North American offering has grown compared with last November, up 17%.

The growth comes despite the ongoing war in Iran, which has left Gulf carriers more exposed than before the conflict began. Etihad appears to be positioning its network for when it ends.

Calgary follows two other recent North American launches. Atlanta started in July 2025, followed by Charlotte in March 2026, which made Etihad the only Middle Eastern airline serving North Carolina. No other new US or Canadian destination has been announced. The airline previously served Dallas until 2018, San Francisco until 2017 and Los Angeles until 2020.

Early results from Atlanta and Charlotte

US Department of Transportation data shows Etihad carried 163,673 passengers to and from Atlanta between July 2025 and June 2026, with a load factor of 79.9%, five points below the carrier's US average. Five of those months were more than 90% full. In Charlotte, Etihad carried 34,406 passengers from March to June 2026 at a 73.3% load factor, with June at 70.3%.

For Calgary, the 787-9 gives Etihad a right-sized aircraft to test a market that has never had a nonstop link to the Gulf. Travellers in Alberta gain a one-stop option to India, South Asia and the wider Middle East via Abu Dhabi, while Etihad adds a new Canadian gateway to a network it is clearly still building out.
