Two Star Alliance heavyweights are deepening their partnership on a route that neither of them has traditionally shared. Schedule filings published by AeroRoutes on 21 August 2026 show Singapore Airlines expanding its codeshare with Lufthansa to cover the German carrier's Frankfurt β Kuala Lumpur service from 25 October 2026, the start of the northern winter season.
What the filing shows
Lufthansa operates the route with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, five times weekly. Under the expanded arrangement, both flights carry Singapore Airlines flight numbers alongside Lufthansa's own.
Outbound, LH704 β marketed as SQ2274 β departs Frankfurt at 21:30 and arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 16:40 the following day. The return, LH705 / SQ2275, leaves Kuala Lumpur at 23:55 and lands in Frankfurt at 06:00 the next morning. The overnight timings in both directions are typical for the Europe β Southeast Asia market, putting passengers into each end of the route at the start of a working day.
An unusual pairing
The interesting part is geographic. Singapore Airlines' home hub sits barely 300 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur, and the two cities are among the busiest short-haul airport pairs in the world. A codeshare that lets SIA sell a Lufthansa flight into Kuala Lumpur is not about feeding Singapore β it is about giving the carrier a sellable Frankfurt β Kuala Lumpur itinerary in its own inventory without flying it.
For Lufthansa, the benefit runs the other way: access to Singapore Airlines' distribution strength across Southeast Asia and Australasia on a route where the German carrier is the only one of the two actually operating.
Why the 787-9
The 787-9 is a twin-engine widebody with distinctive chevron-edged engine nacelles and raked wingtips, and it has become Lufthansa's tool of choice for medium-density long-haul markets. It carries fewer passengers than the airline's A350s or 747s while offering comparable range, which makes it well suited to a five-weekly route that does not need daily widebody capacity but does need the range to fly Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur nonstop in both directions.
Filings can move
Codeshare arrangements and the schedules attached to them are subject to regulatory approval and commercial revision, and published winter timings are routinely adjusted before the season starts. The 25 October 2026 date marks the start of the northern winter schedule rather than a hard commitment.
What the filing does confirm is direction: two of Star Alliance's largest members are choosing to cooperate on Southeast Asian access rather than compete for it.
