Qantas A321 Freighter Lands First At Western Sydney

A Qantas Airbus A321 freighter has become the first cargo aircraft to land at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, touching down on a readiness flight ahead of the start of regular freight operations later this month. Flight QF7301 landed at WSI at 2:00pm, marking the first freighter arrival at Sydney's second major airport.

The flight was not a commercial service. Qantas and the airport used it to validate the operational processes that will underpin the new Cargo Precinct, including aircraft handling, ground operations, systems, airside coordination and cargo transfer procedures. Live aircraft trials of this kind are a standard part of an airport's operational readiness program, allowing every link in the chain to be tested with a real aircraft on the ramp before paying freight is loaded.

Regular freighter flights begin on 27 July

Qantas will begin regular domestic freighter operations from Western Sydney International on 27 July. The new terminal is expected to handle more than 850 tonnes of freight each week, moving through a purpose-built 24,000 square-metre freight facility that will run around the clock.

"Western Sydney International Airport is set to become one of Australia's key air freight hubs and today's flight was an important opportunity to test key procedures ahead of starting operations," said Qantas Freight Executive Manager Igor Kwiatkowski. "In just a few weeks, this new 24-hour facility will provide greater flexibility for our freight network, helping us meet growing demand for e-commerce and next-day deliveries."

Kwiatkowski added that the airport "will increase Sydney's air cargo capacity helping us to move time-critical supplies around Australia and overseas in the months ahead."

Why a 24-hour airport matters for cargo

The appeal of Western Sydney for freight is straightforward: it can operate at night. Kingsford Smith Airport at Mascot is bound by a long-standing curfew, which shapes when freighters can move in and out of Australia's busiest air cargo gateway. A 24-hour facility on the western side of the basin gives operators windows that simply do not exist at the existing airport, which is exactly the flexibility express and e-commerce networks depend on.

Western Sydney International Chief Executive Officer Simon Hickey said the airport had "utilised the latest technology and innovations to deliver a highly efficient, sustainable, and future-proofed 24-hour Cargo Precinct," adding that the readiness program and live aircraft trials were "an excellent opportunity to test these capabilities." He also acknowledged the coordination between the airport, Airservices Australia and the Cargo Precinct partners in delivering the trial program.

The A321 freighter's growing role

The aircraft used for the milestone is part of Qantas Freight's converted Airbus A321 fleet, a narrow-body freighter type that has become the backbone of domestic express networks in Australia. Converted from former passenger jets, the A321 offers significantly more volume and payload than the older 737-derived freighters it replaces, while retaining the operating economics of a single-aisle aircraft on short domestic sectors.

Passenger flights follow in October

Cargo is only the opening act. Jetstar will operate the first commercial passenger flight from Western Sydney International on 25 October 2026, the airport's opening day, with Qantas mainline services following from 28 March 2027 under an agreement between the Qantas Group and WSI covering both passenger and freight operations.

For now, the freight side gets to go first β€” and a red-tailed A321 on short final has given Sydney's newest runway its first real taste of an airline schedule.
