Qatar Airways Launches Starlink Wi-Fi Fleetwide

Qatar Airways has become the first airline to operate a Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-9, taking its total of Starlink-fitted widebodies to 150 and pushing its programme past 83% completion.

Qatar Airways has become the first airline in the world to operate a Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-9, completing the satellite internet rollout across its Boeing 787-8 sub-fleet in seven months. The milestone brings the airline’s total number of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft to 150.

The Doha-based carrier says it remains on track to complete Starlink installation across its entire Boeing 787 fleet by the end of 2026. That would close the last major gap in a retrofit programme that has moved unusually quickly by industry standards.

Three fleets, three rollouts

The 787-9 milestone follows a string of quick installation programmes. Qatar Airways previously completed its Boeing 777 Starlink rollout in nine months and its Airbus A350 rollout in eight months. With those programmes finished, the airline now operates what it describes as the world’s first and largest Starlink-equipped fleets of Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft.

Retrofit speed is the part of this story that other carriers will be reading closely. Connectivity upgrades normally compete for the same hangar slots and downtime windows as heavy maintenance, and airlines routinely stretch fleet-wide installations across several years. Compressing three widebody fleets into consecutive programmes of seven, eight and nine months implies the work is being folded into existing maintenance visits rather than driving additional aircraft-on-ground time.

Where it has reached

Qatar Airways was also the first airline to offer Starlink connectivity globally on long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes spanning six continents. The carrier has been expanding access to free, gate-to-gate Wi-Fi across more of its network, including routes to the Americas, Australasia, and key gateways throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Gate-to-gate access is not available at every airport, because local regulatory requirements govern when a satellite terminal may transmit on the ground.

Since launching Starlink onboard in October 2024, the airline says more than 23 million passengers have connected to the service across over 86,000 flights. The Starlink programme has now passed 83% completion across the widebody fleet, with up to 323 Starlink-equipped flights operating each day.

What passengers actually get

Starlink offers Wi-Fi speeds of up to 500 Mbps, enough for passengers to work, stay in touch with family or stream content in flight. Access is available through Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club membership authentication and enrolment process, so the service is free at the point of use but tied to a loyalty account rather than open to anonymous connection.

That authentication model matters commercially. Free connectivity is expensive to provide, and routing every user through the loyalty programme converts a cost centre into an enrolment channel. Several carriers that have gone down the free-Wi-Fi road have adopted a similar structure for the same reason.

The competitive picture

Low-earth-orbit connectivity has become one of the few onboard products where the difference between airlines is immediately obvious to passengers. Legacy geostationary systems struggle with latency and with coverage over polar and mid-ocean tracks β€” precisely the sectors that long-haul carriers fly most. A widebody fleet that is more than four-fifths converted, running hundreds of equipped flights a day, is a meaningful lead rather than a marketing line.

Completing the 787 fleet by the end of 2026 would leave Qatar Airways with a fully equipped widebody operation, at which point the differentiator shifts from availability to reliability and speed under load.
