Singapore Airlines has officially selected SpaceX's Starlink to power its next-generation in-flight connectivity, in a deal that promises to transform the passenger experience on the carrier's long-haul fleet. The announcement, made on May 4, 2026, positions SIA as one of the first major Asian carriers to commit to Starlink's low Earth orbit broadband network.
The upgrade replaces Singapore Airlines' existing satellite-based connectivity system with Starlink's constellation of thousands of LEO satellites, capable of delivering speeds of up to one gigabit per second per antenna. For passengers, this translates into the ability to stream high-definition video, participate in video calls, transfer large files, and game online at altitudes where current in-flight Wi-Fi systems struggle to maintain even basic browsing speeds.
According to Singapore Airlines' official announcement, the rollout will begin in the first quarter of 2027 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2029. The installation will cover approximately 53 aircraft in the long-haul fleet, specifically the Airbus A350-900 standard and ultra-long-range variants, as well as the carrier's flagship Airbus A380 superjumbos.
The connectivity will be offered at no additional cost for passengers in Suites, First Class, and Business Class. Economy passengers who are members of KrisFlyer β Singapore Airlines' free-to-join loyalty program β will also receive unlimited complimentary Wi-Fi access, effectively making high-speed connectivity available to all passengers who take the simple step of enrolling in the frequent flyer program.
The Starlink deal reflects a broader industry trend toward LEO-based in-flight connectivity. Traditional geostationary satellite systems, which orbit at approximately 35,000 kilometers above Earth, introduce latency that makes real-time applications like video calling impractical. Starlink's satellites orbit at roughly 550 kilometers, dramatically reducing latency and enabling a ground-like internet experience.
Singapore Airlines has consistently ranked among the world's top carriers for cabin product and service quality, and the Starlink integration represents a continuation of that philosophy. As in-flight connectivity increasingly becomes a deciding factor for premium travelers choosing between carriers, SIA's early adoption of LEO technology could provide a meaningful competitive advantage on ultra-long-haul routes where passengers spend 15 hours or more in the air.
In other company news, the SIA Group announced a S$30 million foundation to support communities and contribute to the aviation industry's growth, along with several senior management promotions β signaling continued investment in both its people and its broader social commitments.
