Aegean has appointed Michalis Kouveliotis as chief executive officer, effective 12 October 2026, succeeding Dimitris Gerogiannis after 20 years in the airline's top executive role. Gerogiannis will remain involved as an adviser, with oversight of the group's Technical Base and Training Center as the Greek carrier transfers responsibility to a new generation of managers.
A handover prepared inside the airline
According to Aegean's announcement, Kouveliotis served as chief financial officer before the company listed on the Athens Stock Exchange. He became deputy chief executive in early 2025, taking responsibility for coordinating its business divisions as part of preparations for the transition.
That sequence puts an established member of the management team in charge. The appointment builds on a period in which Kouveliotis already had responsibilities extending across the business, while the outgoing chief retains a defined role in two areas that Aegean has identified for further development.
Formal changes at board level
A separate stock-exchange announcement dated 12 October records the governance steps behind the handover. The board was informed that Gerogiannis had resigned both as an executive director and as chief executive. Following a recommendation from its remuneration and nomination committee, it elected Kouveliotis to the board and appointed him CEO.
The filing uses the formal name Michail Kouveliotis for the executive identified as Michalis in the company's press announcement. It lists him as an executive board member and chief executive in the newly constituted board. Eftychios Vassilakis remains chairman, while Anastasios David and Panagiotis Laskaridis hold the two vice-chairman positions.
Kouveliotis will serve for the remaining term of the current board. Aegean said the appointment would be announced at its next general meeting of shareholders. The filing also confirms that his service as CFO spanned more than two decades before the leadership transition.
Continuity and the next management generation
As Cyprus Mail reported, chairman Eftichios Vassilakis credited Gerogiannis and founder Theodoros Vassilakis with shaping the airline's approach to customer service, fairness and cooperation. He described the outgoing executive's contribution as combining technical knowledge with an ability to work with people.
The chairman also pointed to Kouveliotis's experience through periods of expansion and difficult operating conditions. His stated priorities for the succession include stronger cooperation among the second generation of executives, maintaining service quality and agility, developing the airline's products and destinations, and bringing through new talent.
Part of a wider management transition
The CEO handover follows earlier appointments announced on 2 October. Stella Dimaraki became CFO and Ilias Mandroukas became chief commercial officer, both effective 1 October after serving as deputies. Dimaraki joined Aegean in 2007; Mandroukas joined in 1999 and has worked in digital commerce and customer-related roles.
The separate technical and training remit also gives the outgoing chief a clear continuing area of responsibility, rather than leaving the advisory position undefined as the new executive team takes over.
Together, those moves place the CEO announcement within a broader transfer of senior responsibilities. The immediate change is who leads the company and how its management duties are allocated. The announcement sets out leadership priorities rather than a new flight schedule or a separate passenger-service launch.
