Wizz Air Opens First Spain Bases In Madrid, Valencia

Wizz Air is planting its flag in Spain for the first time, announcing on 8 July 2026 that it will open two Spanish bases and launch domestic flights within the country during the 2026/27 winter season.

The pan-European low-cost carrier will base aircraft in Valencia from 2 November and in Madrid from 3 November 2026, marking its debut as a locally based operator in one of Europe's largest travel markets. Each base will be equipped with two Airbus A321neo aircraft.

Crucially, the expansion brings Wizz Air into Spain's domestic arena for the first time. From Valencia, the airline will fly five internal routes: daily services to Palma de Mallorca and Bilbao, five weekly flights to Asturias, four weekly to Santiago de Compostela and two weekly to Santander. The Madrid base will connect the capital with three domestic destinations β€” Asturias, Palma and Santiago.

Wizz Air says the move will create around 150 jobs for pilots and cabin crew. It also lifts capacity sharply at both airports: seat numbers in Valencia are set to rise by 76 percent to 3.6 million, while Madrid grows by 48 percent to 4.8 million seats.

The A321neo is central to the plan. Its larger cabin and lower per-seat costs make it a natural fit for the high-volume, price-sensitive routes Wizz Air targets, and basing the aircraft in Spain lets the airline turn them around efficiently on short domestic hops as well as international services.

For Spanish travellers, the arrival of another ultra-low-cost competitor on internal routes could mean more choice and downward pressure on fares, particularly on links to the Balearics and the country's northern regions. For Wizz Air, Spain represents a significant new front in a network historically weighted toward Central and Eastern Europe.

The winter launch also fits a broader pattern of Wizz Air pushing west, adding bases and routes across Western and Southern Europe. Establishing a domestic presence in Spain deepens that strategy and gives the carrier a foothold in a market where demand for low-cost travel remains strong.

With the Valencia and Madrid bases due to open within a day of each other in early November, attention now turns to how incumbent carriers respond on the affected routes β€” and whether Wizz Air's domestic Spanish experiment becomes a template for further expansion elsewhere in the region.
