Air New Zealand Launches 3 New Boeing 787-9 Long-Haul Routes From Christchurch To Singapore Tokyo And Perth In Biggest South Island Expansion In A Decade

Air New Zealand confirmed on Thursday it will launch three brand-new long-haul services from Christchurch to Singapore, Tokyo Narita, and Perth using its returning Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet — the most significant expansion of South Island international flying in more than a decade and a direct challenge to Auckland's grip on inbound long-haul traffic.

Christchurch–Singapore launches first on October 28, 2026, followed by Christchurch–Tokyo Narita from November 28, and Christchurch–Perth on November 30. All three routes will operate three times weekly aboard the 787-9, configured with the carrier's Business Premier, Premium Economy, and refreshed Economy Skycouch cabins. Sales opened immediately, with the carrier promoting the routes as a way to skip Auckland-Mangere transit entirely.

The launch is enabled by the gradual return of Air New Zealand's grounded 787 fleet, which had been hobbled by the global Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 inspection program and persistent General Electric GEnx maintenance backlogs. Recent deliveries of new-build 787-9s with refreshed engines have freed up sufficient widebody capacity to deploy wide-body metal out of a port that has not seen scheduled long-haul service to Asia in over ten years.

A direct play for South Island tourism

Christchurch is the gateway to Queenstown, Aoraki/Mount Cook, and the Southern Alps ski fields — and roughly 60 percent of inbound South Island visitors today still route through Auckland or Sydney. By plugging Christchurch directly into Singapore's Star Alliance hub and Tokyo Narita, Air New Zealand is betting it can capture premium leisure traffic that otherwise leaks to Qantas via Sydney or to Singapore Airlines via Auckland.

The Perth service in particular reopens a Trans-Tasman corridor that has been served only intermittently since 2012. Western Australia is one of New Zealand's fastest-growing inbound source markets, with mining sector travel and family-visit traffic both rising sharply since pandemic borders reopened.

Network implications

The Christchurch expansion comes as Air New Zealand prepares to receive the first of an order of new 787-9 aircraft equipped with GE engines later this year, finally relieving the engine-driven capacity squeeze that forced the airline to suspend its planned Auckland–New York–JFK launch from quarterly summer flying in 2025.

For Christchurch Airport, the routes represent the single largest international capacity uplift in its history and validate a multi-year campaign by the airport authority to court long-haul carriers. Tourism New Zealand has separately committed marketing dollars to the three destination markets to back the new flying.
