American Airlines will drop five routes in 2027 as it scales back the growth it had planned for next summer, while shifting and adding a handful of flights at New York JFK. The changes appeared in the latest Cirium Diio schedule update over the weekend and were first reported by AirlineGeeks on 5 October 2026.
"As part of targeted actions to strengthen the airline, American will moderate its planned growth next summer," an American spokesperson said in a statement to AirlineGeeks. "We will continue to evaluate our network, while remaining focused on investing in our product, enhancing reliability and serving the destinations our customers value most."
The five routes going away
Three of the cuts take effect in January 2027. American will end flights between Phoenix and Provo, Utah; between Miami and Tulum, Mexico; and between Miami and Montreal. Service between Chicago O'Hare and Lincoln, Nebraska, will end in April, and the seasonal Dallas/Fort Worth–Albany, New York, route will not come back next summer.
Together the cuts touch four American hubs, Phoenix, Miami, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth, and include three domestic and two international routes. The airline did not give individual reasons for any of the five changes.
The list is a mix of small domestic markets and leisure or cross-border flying. Provo and Lincoln are smaller airports that rely on a handful of hub links, Tulum is a fast-growing Caribbean-coast leisure destination, and Montreal is one of Canada's largest cities. Dropping them from Miami, Phoenix and Chicago frees aircraft and crews for markets American expects to perform better.
Bozeman moves to JFK
A sixth route flagged in the schedule update is changing airports rather than disappearing. American's New York LaGuardia–Bozeman, Montana, flight is shifting to New York JFK, and the airline said the move lets it raise the service from once weekly to four flights a week. The JFK–Bozeman flights will begin on 18 June 2027 with Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
Bozeman is a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and Montana's mountain resorts, and its summer traffic is heavily seasonal. Moving the route to JFK, where American also feeds its long-haul network, gives travellers more frequencies on the same summer peak.
Seattle returns, Canada grows
American is also adding flying at JFK. It will resume JFK–Seattle service on 6 April 2027 with two daily flights on Airbus A321neo aircraft. The airline last served the route in 2019.
The carrier is also lengthening the seasons for two Canadian destinations from JFK. Calgary service will start earlier, on 17 June, with three weekly flights on the Boeing 737 MAX. Quebec City flights will also begin on 17 June, operated with Embraer E175 regional jets. Tickets for the New York additions went on sale on 5 October.
Trimming growth, not shrinking
The package shows how American is reshaping its 2027 schedule rather than cutting back across the board. The airline is pulling capacity from smaller markets at its southern and midwestern hubs while putting more flights into New York for the summer peak. Restoring Seattle also puts American back on a busy transcontinental route that it left before the pandemic.
It is the latest in a series of network moves from the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier. In recent days American has also started flights between State College, Pennsylvania, and Charlotte, and announced that it will stop involuntarily bumping passengers from oversold flights.
Travellers holding bookings on the five routes after their end dates should check their reservations. American said it will keep evaluating its network, so further adjustments to the summer 2027 schedule are possible. Aviation Shop News will report any additional changes as they appear in schedule filings.
