China Eastern Confirms $15.8 Billion Order for 101 Airbus A320neo Family Jets

China Eastern Airlines has finalized a 101-aircraft Airbus A320neo family order valued at $15.8 billion, locking in narrowbody capacity through 2032 amid slower COMAC C919 ramp-up.

China Eastern Airlines has formally confirmed a $15.8 billion firm order with Airbus for 101 A320neo family aircraft, a deal that locks in single-aisle capacity through 2032 and underscores the carrier's continued reliance on European narrowbodies as the COMAC C919 program ramps up more slowly than planned.

Filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange on March 25 and now flowing through to Airbus' official backlog, the agreement covers a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR variants. China Eastern has indicated that the actual contract pricing is materially below Airbus' January 2024 list catalogue, although the company did not publish a discount figure. The transaction still requires final regulatory approval in Beijing.

Phased deliveries to 2032

The 101 frames will arrive in carefully spaced batches: nine in 2028, 19 in 2029, 30 in 2030, 27 in 2031, and 16 in 2032. Over the same window, China Eastern has flagged that at least 53 older Airbus A320 family aircraft are scheduled to come off lease or reach retirement age, meaning roughly half of the new order is functionally a replacement rather than pure expansion. The remainder will support route additions across China and key international leisure markets in Southeast Asia.

The A321XLR portion of the order is the most strategically interesting element. China Eastern has not previously operated the long-range narrowbody, and analysts expect those aircraft to open thinner long-haul routes from secondary mainland cities into Europe, Australia, and the Middle East without the cost of widebody deployment.

Backdrop: a slow C919 ramp

The order arrives against a backdrop of slower-than-targeted output for the COMAC C919, the Chinese-built rival to the A320neo family. China Eastern remains the C919's largest customer and continues to take deliveries, but production rates have not yet allowed the type to absorb the airline's full near-term narrowbody demand. By doubling down on the proven A320neo family, China Eastern hedges its fleet plan and keeps capacity on the property even if domestic deliveries continue to lag.

For Airbus, the deal is one of the largest single airline orders of 2026 and reinforces its lead over Boeing in the world's second-largest aviation market. With AerCap and Atlas Air both placing major Airbus orders in the same quarter, Toulouse's narrowbody and freighter pipelines are filling well into the next decade.
