EASA Approves Runway Overrun Alert For Embraer E2

Embraer has secured European approval for a runway overrun protection system on its E2 family of regional jets, in a move the airframer says will strengthen safety during one of the most demanding phases of flight, according to FlightGlobal.

The technology, called the Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System, was recently certified by Brazil's civil aviation regulator ANAC, and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency has now granted its own approval. The dual sign-off clears the way for the system to be offered on E2 aircraft operating under European rules.

Embraer says the energy-based function calculates the aircraft's landing performance in real time — both during the approach and after touchdown — through continuous monitoring of the jet. Algorithms developed by the manufacturer evaluate the aircraft's ability to stop safely within the available runway distance, and warn the crew if that margin is at risk of being eroded.

“When a potential risk of exceeding runway limits is identified, the system provides alerts to the flight crew, enhancing situational awareness and supporting safer decision-making,” the airframer said. The aim is to give pilots earlier, clearer information at a point in the flight where decisions must be made quickly and the consequences of misjudging available runway can be severe.

Runway excursions — where an aircraft runs off the end or side of a runway — remain one of the most common categories of aviation incident worldwide, which is why systems that help crews judge stopping distance have drawn growing regulatory attention. “This innovative technology reinforces our commitment to continually advancing aviation safety through practical, intelligent solutions,” said Embraer chief technology officer Luis Carlos Affonso.

The approval also lands against a shifting regulatory backdrop. EASA has mandated runway overrun prevention for certain newly-built large aircraft types from 1 July, having previously deferred that deadline by 18 months from the start of last year. For Embraer, securing certification of its own system positions the E2 family to meet the tightening expectations around runway safety.

The E2 is the re-engined, second generation of Embraer's popular E-Jet regional family, offering improved fuel efficiency and updated systems compared with the original E-Jets. Adding a certified runway overrun alerting capability gives operators an additional safety layer that is increasingly viewed as standard equipment on modern airliners rather than an optional extra.

By earning approval from both its home regulator and Europe's safety agency, Embraer ensures the system can be adopted across a broad swath of its customer base. As runway overrun protection moves from a differentiator toward a baseline requirement, certifications like this one are likely to become a routine part of bringing regional jets into service.
