Lufthansa is set to become the next major carrier to offer high-speed Starlink WiFi on scheduled passenger flights. The Cologne-registered German flag carrier and Star Alliance founding member is planning an August 19 rollout of the new connectivity system.
The service will initially be available on one of the airline's Airbus A320neo narrowbody twinjets. From that single-aircraft start, Lufthansa intends to expand the installation dramatically, with plans to fit the low-earth-orbit satellite system to some 850 aircraft over the coming years.
The rollout is not limited to the mainline Lufthansa brand. According to the reporting, all Lufthansa Group airlines are due to have Starlink connectivity by 2029, pointing to a group-wide upgrade across its multiple carriers rather than a single-airline trial.
Starlink's appeal for airlines lies in its speed and low latency compared with older satellite systems. The technology, built on a large constellation of low-earth-orbit satellites, is designed to deliver a home-broadband-like experience at cruising altitude, supporting streaming and video calls that legacy inflight WiFi often struggles with.
Lufthansa joins a growing list of carriers turning to Starlink for cabin connectivity as passenger expectations for fast, reliable internet continue to rise. Choosing to debut the system on a workhorse A320neo underlines how central short- and medium-haul narrowbody flying is to the group's network.
With the first aircraft due to enter service with the new system in a matter of days, Lufthansa's move marks another step in the wider industry shift toward high-capacity satellite connectivity as a standard part of the onboard experience.
