Lufthansa is rearranging its Airbus A380 flying in the first quarter of 2027, pulling the superjumbo off two US West Coast routes and pushing the capacity into Asia instead. The changes appear in schedule filings dated 16 August 2026 and were reported by AeroRoutes on 17 August.
The clearest winner is Bangkok. Between 16 January and 26 February 2027, MunichβBangkok Suvarnabhumi goes from one to two daily flights, with every service in the period operated by the A380. The frequency increase applies only during that window. The filed timetable shows LH774 leaving Munich at 16:25 for a 09:05 arrival the next morning, and LH772 departing at 22:10 to land at 14:50. Northbound, LH775 leaves Bangkok at 10:50 for a 16:40 arrival in Munich, while LH773 departs at 23:30 and arrives at 05:20 the following morning.
Paying for that is the US network. From 11 January to 26 February 2027, MunichβLos Angeles drops to a single daily Airbus A350-900, replacing what had been six weekly A380 flights plus one weekly A350-900. MunichβSan Francisco follows the same pattern from 16 January to 27 February 2027, moving to one daily A350-900 instead of six weekly A380s and one weekly A350-900.
India also gains. On MunichβMumbai, between 11 January and 27 February 2027, five of the seven weekly flights switch to the A380 in place of the A350-900. MunichβDelhi is unaffected by the reshuffle: Lufthansa continues to operate one daily A380 there through the winter season.
Taken together, the moves point to a seasonal capacity read rather than a permanent network shift. Deep winter is the softest part of the year for transatlantic leisure demand into California, while January and February cover the peak of European travel to Thailand and strong traffic into India. Swapping the A380 for the smaller A350-900 on the two West Coast routes trims a large amount of capacity from markets that are hardest to fill at that time of year, and redeploys it where the airline expects to sell it.
The A380 has become a Munich-centred asset for Lufthansa, and this filing underlines how the airline is now using it: as a flexible block of high-density capacity that can be moved between long-haul markets season by season rather than fixed to a handful of flagship routes.
As always with schedule filings this far out, the detail can change before the period settles into its final form. But the pattern β A380s off the US West Coast in deep winter, A380s onto Bangkok and Mumbai β is a deliberate one, and it is now in the system.
