Virgin Australia is adding a weekly charter service between Perth and Alice Springs during the northern winter 2026/27 season, operated with the Boeing 737-700.
According to schedule data published by AeroRoutes, the charter is loaded once weekly on Fridays from 30 October 2026 to 29 January 2027. VA9491 departs Perth at 05:45 and arrives at Alice Springs at 10:10, with the return, VA9492, leaving Alice Springs at 10:50 for a 12:50 arrival back in Perth. Both rotations are listed with 737-700 equipment.
Why a charter rather than a scheduled route
Charter flying sits in a different commercial category from scheduled service. Rather than selling seats to the general public and carrying the risk of filling the aircraft, the airline contracts the capacity to a customer who takes on that responsibility. In Australia, that model is common for resource-sector, government and specialist group travel, and the timing here is consistent with it: an early morning departure from Perth with a same-day return from Alice Springs a little over half an hour after arrival is a rotation designed around a passenger group with a fixed itinerary, not around leisure demand.
The flight numbers reinforce the point. Virgin Australia uses a distinct high-number series for charter operations, keeping them clearly separated from its scheduled network in both its own systems and public schedule data.
Perth to Alice Springs
The sector links Western Australia's capital with the Northern Territory's principal inland centre, crossing a large stretch of Australia's interior. It is not a market that ordinarily supports high-frequency scheduled flying, which is part of why a contracted weekly rotation makes sense: it delivers a specific block of capacity on a specific day without committing the airline to a year-round schedule.
The 737-700 in the fleet
The Boeing 737-700 is the short-fuselage member of the 737 Next Generation family, a single-aisle twinjet powered by two CFM56 engines and fitted with blended winglets. Its lower seat count relative to the 737-800 makes it a natural fit for charter and thinner regional work, where a smaller cabin is easier to fill and the aircraft's field performance is useful at airports with shorter runways or hot-and-high conditions. Alice Springs, sitting inland at elevation with high summer temperatures, is exactly the kind of station where those characteristics matter.
As with any filing loaded well ahead of the season, the schedule remains subject to change. As published, the charter runs weekly across the three-month window from late October 2026 to the end of January 2027.
