European Planemaker Faces Headwinds Despite Record Backlog
Airbus delivered a sobering Q1 2026 earnings report, revealing that its adjusted operating profit plummeted by 52 percent compared to the same period last year. Profit fell from 624 million euros to just 300 million euros, a decline that surprised many industry analysts who had expected the manufacturer to benefit from strong demand.
The primary culprit behind the profit squeeze is the ongoing engine supply crisis affecting Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan engines, which power a significant portion of the A320neo family. The engine shortages have forced Airbus to slow production on some lines and have caused delivery delays that ripple through its financial performance. Airlines waiting for new A320neo and A321neo aircraft have been forced to extend leases on older, less efficient planes.
Despite the earnings disappointment, Airbus maintained its full-year delivery target of 870 aircraft for 2026, although this figure already sits below what many analysts had initially forecast. The company emphasized that supply chain constraints remain the binding factor on production rather than demand, which continues to be robust across all programs.
The results stand in sharp contrast to Boeing's recent momentum. For the first time since the 737 MAX crisis began in 2018, Boeing actually surpassed Airbus in quarterly deliveries during Q1 2026, delivering more commercial aircraft in the January-to-March period. While Airbus still holds a commanding 60 percent share of the narrowbody market, Boeing's recovery is narrowing the gap at a time when Airbus can least afford to stumble.
