American Airlines Delay Makes 3 Lawmakers Miss House Votes

American Airlines is facing a public rebuke from Capitol Hill after a lengthy delay left three members of Congress unable to return to Washington in time for votes on Monday evening.

Representative Max Miller (R-Ohio) said the delay stranded him and two other House members, causing them to miss a series of votes β€” including final passage of the Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act, which cleared the House by a margin of 267 to 117.

In a post on X, Miller did not mince words, writing that β€œthree members of Congress will miss votes tonight because of your incompetent airline.” According to the congressman, the aircraft sat on the tarmac for more than two hours before returning to the gate, where passengers were deplaned and sent back into the terminal.

Miller added that the episode was far from an isolated one. He said he has resorted to driving to Washington, D.C., for the last seven months because of repeated disruptions on the airline’s flights out of his home region in northeastern Ohio.

American Airlines apologizes

The carrier responded publicly, telling the lawmaker: β€œWe know how important it is to get where you’re going on time, and we’re truly sorry for the delay.” American said its ground team was working hard to get affected passengers moving again.

Flight delays are an operational reality for every major airline, driven by weather, air traffic control constraints, crew scheduling and aircraft availability. What makes this incident notable is less the delay itself than the platform of the passenger: a sitting member of Congress with a direct line to aviation policy and a large public audience.

For American Airlines β€” the world’s largest carrier by fleet size β€” the exchange is an unwelcome reminder of how quickly a single disrupted rotation can escalate into a national talking point when high-profile travellers are involved.
