Air India May Restore Flights As Gulf Airspace Reopens

Air India could begin reversing some of the deep international schedule cuts it announced last month, chief executive Campbell Wilson has signalled, as regional airspace reopens and jet fuel prices ease.

Wilson said the Tata Group-owned airline may be able to wind back part of its network reductions provided the recent trend of easing airspace restrictions and moderating fuel costs continues amid an abating conflict in West Asia. He cautioned, however, that there is no guarantee the situation will not escalate again.

Last month, Air India announced a 27% reduction in international flying, citing airspace curbs and higher jet fuel costs that had pushed up operating expenses on overseas sectors. The carrier also temporarily trimmed roughly 22% of its domestic flights as it grappled with the same cost pressures.

Reopened corridors ease the maths

The reopening of regional air corridors has reduced the need for lengthy detours, cutting flight times and lowering fuel consumption on long-haul routes β€” improvements that make previously suspended services more viable to restore.

Fleet moves are also supporting the potential recovery. Air India recently returned a Boeing 787-9 to service, adding long-haul capacity, while another Boeing 787-8 is undergoing a cabin retrofit aimed at improving the passenger experience on international routes.

Any restoration would mark a notable turnaround for the airline, which has been navigating a demanding operating environment while pursuing a broader transformation under Tata ownership.
