China Eastern Makes Shanghai-Sapporo Daily In NW26

China Eastern will increase Shanghai Pudong to Sapporo New Chitose from three weekly to one daily flight from October 25, 2026, operating the route with Airbus A321 aircraft through the northern winter season.

China Eastern is stepping up its presence in Hokkaido for the coming winter. The SkyTeam carrier has opened reservations for additional flights between Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Sapporo New Chitose (CTS), moving the route from three weekly services to one daily from October 25, 2026, for the northern winter 2026/27 season.

The schedule is built around a single daily rotation flown with Airbus A321 equipment. MU279 departs Shanghai Pudong at 08:20 and arrives at New Chitose at 12:30, with the return MU280 leaving Sapporo at 13:30 and touching down back in Shanghai at 17:10. The pairing keeps the aircraft on a clean same-day turn with a short ground time in Japan.

Hokkaido's winter pull

Sapporo is one of the most seasonal destinations in North Asia. New Chitose sits at the gateway to Hokkaido's ski regions, and demand from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia climbs steeply from late autumn as the snow season begins. Carriers across the region routinely add frequencies or upgauge equipment for the winter and then pull the capacity out again in spring.

Going from three weekly to daily is a meaningful step rather than a token one. A daily service makes a route bookable for short-break travellers and for tour operators building packages around fixed departure days, and it also allows connecting itineraries through Shanghai to work in both directions on a consistent basis.

Why an A321 fits

The A321 is a natural aircraft for this mission. The sector is roughly a four-hour flight, comfortably within narrowbody range, and the type's roughly 190-to-200-seat capacity is well matched to a leisure market that fills reliably but does not justify a widebody outside the absolute peak. Operating a narrowbody daily rather than a widebody three times a week also spreads risk: if bookings soften, the airline is exposed on fewer seats per departure.

China Eastern has leaned heavily on the A320 family across its short and medium-haul network, and Shanghai Pudong is the natural base from which to fly it into Japan. The carrier already serves multiple Japanese cities from its Shanghai hubs, and Hokkaido has been one of the more consistent performers among those markets in the winter season.

The wider China-Japan picture

Traffic between mainland China and Japan has been rebuilding steadily, with capacity restoration concentrated on leisure-heavy destinations rather than on the traditional business routes that dominated a decade ago. Hokkaido, Okinawa and Osaka have all seen more attention from Chinese carriers than Tokyo's business-centric market in recent seasons.

Winter schedule filings remain subject to change until closer to the season, and carriers regularly adjust frequencies on Japanese routes as forward bookings develop. For now, though, travellers planning a Hokkaido ski trip out of Shanghai this winter will have a daily option rather than a three-times-weekly one.
