China Eastern Opens First Beijing-Bali Nonstop

China Eastern Airlines has launched nonstop flights between Beijing Daxing and Bali, establishing the first direct air link between the Chinese capital and the Indonesian island. The inaugural service, operated by an Airbus A330, touched down at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on July 11.

Until now, travellers making the journey from Beijing to Bali had to connect β€” typically through a southern Chinese hub or a Southeast Asian gateway. Removing that connection from an already long journey is the whole point of the route, and it puts Beijing Daxing on a very short list of North Asian airports with a direct link to the island.

China Is Bali's Second-Largest Source Market

The commercial logic is straightforward. Indonesian airport operator InJourney Airports says the new route is expected to strengthen Bali's connectivity with China, which ranked as the island's second-largest source market during the first half of 2026 with roughly 297,000 visitor arrivals.

That figure is the number that matters. Bali's tourism economy has spent the past few years rebuilding its long-haul feed, and Chinese demand has been one of the strongest components of that recovery. A direct link from Beijing does not just serve the capital β€” it captures traffic from across northern China that would otherwise route through a competitor's hub, and it does so with a widebody rather than a narrow-body, which matters for both cabin comfort and belly cargo.

Why The A330 Is The Right Tool

China Eastern's choice of the Airbus A330 for the inaugural flight fits the mission profile neatly. The distance from Beijing to Bali sits comfortably within the type's range, and the aircraft offers the capacity to carry meaningful leisure volumes without the cost base of a larger widebody on a route whose demand will inevitably swing with the seasons.

The A330 has become the workhorse of exactly this kind of medium-haul international flying for Chinese carriers β€” long enough that a narrow-body would be uncomfortable and range-limited, but not so long that the economics demand a 777 or A350. It is the aircraft you deploy when you want to open a market properly and still be able to right-size later.

For Beijing Daxing, meanwhile, the route is another entry in a slowly filling international map. The airport opened with enormous capacity and has spent years earning the long-haul services to justify it. A direct link to one of Asia's best-known leisure destinations is precisely the kind of route that helps it do that.
