Frontier Becomes First US ULCC To Add Starlink Wi-Fi

Frontier Airlines has announced it will install SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet across its fleet, becoming the first ultra-low-cost carrier in the United States to commit to the high-speed connectivity platform. Installations are expected to begin in early 2027.

For Frontier, this is not an upgrade so much as a first. The Denver-based carrier has never offered onboard Wi-Fi of any kind. Passengers who wanted to work, stream or scroll above 10,000 feet simply could not, and that absence had become one of the more conspicuous gaps in the airline's product as it pushed upmarket with new premium seating and a revamped loyalty programme.

What passengers get

The airline says its first Starlink-equipped aircraft is expected to enter service in early 2027, delivering gate-to-gate connectivity fast enough for streaming, browsing, gaming and ordinary work. Customers will connect through a new Starlink-managed internet portal.

One question Frontier has pointedly not answered is price. United and several other carriers have committed to offering Starlink free of charge, treating fast connectivity as a loyalty play rather than an ancillary line item. Frontier has not said whether its service will be complimentary or paid, and for an ultra-low-cost carrier whose entire commercial model is built on unbundling, the safe assumption is that nothing arrives free by default. The airline has simply not committed either way yet.

Why an ULCC is doing this at all

Connectivity has historically been a hard sell in the ultra-low-cost world. The hardware is heavy, the installation takes aircraft out of service, and the drag penalty from a fuselage-mounted antenna is a real cost on an airline that measures everything in cents per available seat mile. That arithmetic is precisely what kept Wi-Fi off Frontier's aircraft for so long.

Starlink changes the maths. Its low-earth-orbit constellation delivers far higher throughput than the geostationary systems that preceded it, with lighter and lower-profile hardware, and its commercial terms have been aggressive enough to bring carriers on board that had previously written connectivity off entirely. The result is that an amenity once reserved for full-service long-haul cabins is now landing on budget narrow-bodies.

The Indigo Partners pattern

Frontier's move does not stand alone. Through Indigo Partners, the private equity firm behind the airline, sister carriers Wizz Air, Volaris, JetSMART and Cebu Pacific also plan to install Starlink across their fleets. Together, the five airlines expect to equip more than 1,000 aircraft, making this one of the largest Starlink rollouts announced to date.

That is the strategic context worth holding on to. This is not one budget airline experimenting at the margins; it is a coordinated bet across an entire portfolio of low-cost carriers on three continents, negotiated at a scale that individual airlines could not achieve alone. Indigo Partners has run this playbook before with aircraft orders β€” pooling demand across its airlines to extract better terms from Airbus β€” and it is now applying the same logic to cabin technology.

What it means for the rest of the US budget sector

The obvious question is who follows. Frontier's principal domestic rivals in the ultra-low-cost segment have their own connectivity gaps, and being the last airline in the market without Wi-Fi is a materially worse place to stand than being one of several. Once a competitor can advertise streaming-quality internet on a $59 fare, the argument that budget passengers do not expect connectivity gets considerably harder to make.

Frontier has bought itself roughly a year and a half of runway before the first aircraft flies with the system fitted. Whether it charges for it will tell us more about where the ULCC model is heading than the announcement itself does.
