New York John F. Kennedy International Airport’s New Terminal One will not welcome passengers in 2026. The operator now expects the first phase to open in the first quarter of 2027 after previously targeting sometime this year — with hopes at one point centered on summer 2026 — Simple Flying reported on September 15, citing The Points Guy. The $9.5 billion project replaces today’s Terminal 1 and the former Terminals 2 and 3 with a larger international gateway on JFK’s south side.
Phase one planned for 2027 includes 13 gates plus one temporary gate so airlines can start moving traffic before the full complex is finished. Once that slice is live, the existing Terminal 1 is expected to be demolished to clear the second phase, which adds nine more gates for a completed total of 23. A New Terminal One spokesperson told TPG the delay is about ensuring systems and processes are well tested so the terminal can set a new customer-experience standard from day one rather than opening into unfinished operations.
The finished building is described by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a 2.6-million-square-foot facility that will become JFK’s largest terminal, with 22 of the 23 gates sized for widebody aircraft. More than 300,000 square feet of retail, dining and lounge space is planned, along with about 13,000 solar panels billed as New York City’s largest solar array. Six lounges are expected inside the complex, including a major new Air France lounge tied to the airline’s long-haul presence at the airport.
Airline partners listed for the terminal include Air France, KLM, Etihad Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, EVA Air, Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Air China and Philippine Airlines. That mix underlines why the schedule slip matters for premium international traffic: carriers waiting for modern widebody gates and lounges will keep using older facilities through the rest of 2026 and into early 2027 while construction close-out and operational rehearsals continue across systems and concessions.
The New Terminal One sits inside a wider JFK rebuild that also includes a new Terminal 6 expected to accommodate JetBlue, United Airlines and several Star Alliance carriers. Port Authority materials call the $9.5 billion New Terminal One the largest public-private partnership in the United States and project roughly 10,000 jobs, including about 6,000 union construction roles. Those investment and employment figures are unchanged by the calendar shift; only the passenger opening date moved forward into 2027. Port Authority project pages still list the same scope and budget for the completed terminal.
For travelers, the practical message is simple and clear today. Do not expect to clear security in the showcase New Terminal One this winter or during next summer’s peak long-haul season. Barring another slip, the first gates should open in Q1 2027 after airline fit-out and end-to-end testing finish — a delay measured in months against the prior 2026 target, not a cancellation of the project itself.
