Qatar Airways is about to operate what will become the world's shortest bookable Airbus A350 service in 2026. On August 12 and 13, the Doha-based carrier is scheduled to fly its widebody A350-900 between its Hamad International Airport (DOH) hub and Bahrain International Airport (BAH), a hop of roughly 80 nautical miles across the waters of the Persian Gulf.
It is an eye-catching pairing: one of the most advanced long-haul twinjets ever built, assigned to a sector so short that the seatbelt signs will barely have time to switch off. The A350-900 in Qatar Airways' fleet seats 283 passengers across business and economy, and it is designed for routes stretching well beyond 15 hours. Putting it on an 80-nautical-mile shuttle is, quite simply, one of the more unusual aircraft assignments of the year.
Why an A350 on such a tiny route?
The Doha-Bahrain corridor is one of the busiest short-haul city pairs in the Gulf, and Qatar Airways normally serves it with narrowbody Airbus A320ceo aircraft operating multiple daily rotations. For these two dates, the airline is temporarily substituting the widebody A350 in place of the smaller Airbus, a move that lets it manage capacity and aircraft positioning during a period of schedule adjustments.
Short widebody hops are not new for Qatar Airways. The carrier was the launch customer of both the A350-900 and the larger A350-1000, and it has long used its widebody fleet to feed connecting traffic into Doha on comparatively brief regional sectors. Deploying spare widebody capacity on a dense, high-demand route is an efficient way to move large numbers of connecting passengers when the flow of the network calls for it.

At around 80 nautical miles gate to gate, the Doha-Bahrain sector is one of the shortest international routes flown anywhere in the region. Block times on the pairing are typically well under an hour, with actual time in the air amounting to little more than a brief climb and an almost immediate descent. For aviation enthusiasts and frequent flyers, catching an A350 on a sector this short is a genuine novelty, and the type's presence temporarily hands the route bragging rights as the world's shortest scheduled A350 operation of the year.
For Qatar Airways, the substitution underlines the flexibility of a fleet built around common Airbus widebody types. Being able to slot an A350 onto a route normally worked by a narrowbody, then return it to long-haul duty afterwards, is exactly the kind of operational agility that large hub carriers rely on to keep their networks moving smoothly.
Passengers booked on the two flights will get a rare chance to sample a flagship widebody cabin on a route that would usually offer a single-aisle experience, even if only for a matter of minutes in the air before the aircraft returns to its more familiar intercontinental role.
