The Royal Air Force's Red Arrows aerobatic display team has canceled a series of upcoming UK appearances after delays returning home from a tour of the United States.
On August 8, 2026, the RAF confirmed the team would be unable to complete displays at Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week. The Red Arrows had been due to perform at Eastbourne on August 14, 15 and 16, make a flypast at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on August 15, and mark the start of Lyme Regis RNLI Lifeboat Week on August 16.
The cause is a stubborn stretch of bad weather far from the UK. The RAF explained that a prolonged period of poor weather in the north-eastern regions of Canada meant the team's return from the United States was postponed last week. The Red Arrows had been in the US as part of a month of displays marking 250 years since the American War of Independence, with the return journey planned through Canada, Greenland and Iceland.
Geography and the aircraft's limits make the crossing unusually demanding. The Red Arrows' BAE Hawk jets have a limited range and cannot carry out air-to-air refueling, so the Atlantic must be crossed in stages. With only a small number of diversion airfields available along the route, the team relies on RAF support aircraft, including search-and-rescue cover and aircraft carrying essential technical equipment, being in the right place at the right time.
The RAF said conditions in north-east Canada had been "particularly challenging," made harder by the Atlantic's "complex weather patterns." A spokesperson added: "It is now anticipated this Atlantic crossing will be able to begin again from late next week based on more favorable conditions."
The service stressed that the delay had been anticipated as a risk. "A reasonable buffer window, to help mitigate potential delays for the Atlantic return, was always factored into the planning of Operation Eagle Hawk based on vast experience gained during previous crossings safely carried out in 2019 and 2024," the RAF said. While temporarily based at CFB Goose Bay in Canada, the team carried out scheduled engineering that had been due to take place in the UK.
Wing Commander Sasha Nash, Officer Commanding the RAF Aerobatic Team, apologized to organizers and audiences. "We are very sorry the Red Arrows cannot participate at these events, and we are grateful to organizers and communities for their understanding," she said. "Every effort is being made to ensure the Red Arrows can recommence the busy display season as soon as possible." Nash added that "safety is the only factor that will determine the timing of the team's return from Canada."
Barring further delays, the team is expected to resume its schedule later in August, with the Red Arrows still due to appear at Cromer Carnival on the Norfolk coast on August 19. For now, though, three high-profile summer engagements have fallen victim to weather on the wrong side of the Atlantic.
