Decoding chart symbols
Sectionals use standardised symbols for airports (towered shown in blue, non-towered in magenta), navigation aids, obstacles with their heights, and landmarks. The chart legend is your key — experienced pilots know the common symbols by heart but still reference the legend for the unusual ones.
Airspace classifications
US airspace is divided into classes:
- Class A — high altitude, IFR only.
- Class B — busiest airports; clearance required (solid blue lines).
