JetBlue Adds 11 New Destinations From Fort Lauderdale Targeting Spirit Airlines' Former Hub As Network Vacuum Opens

JetBlue Airways announced the largest network expansion in its history from Fort Lauderdale, adding 11 new destinations to absorb the void left by Spirit Airlines' May 2 shutdown.

JetBlue Airways unveiled what executives are calling the largest single-market network expansion in the airline's 26-year history, announcing 11 brand-new destinations from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to capture passenger demand and gate capacity left behind by Spirit Airlines' shock collapse on May 2, 2026.

The new routes — most launching between July 1 and November 1, 2026 — will more than double JetBlue's Fort Lauderdale schedule and add roughly 1.6 million annual seats at the airport, where Spirit was previously the dominant carrier with 11.4 million annual seats and an estimated 38% market share. New destinations include Aguadilla (Puerto Rico), Cap-Haïtien (Haiti), Curaçao, Liberia (Costa Rica), Managua, Nassau, Ponce, Quito, San Pedro Sula, Santiago (Dominican Republic), and Tegucigalpa.

"Spirit's customers in Fort Lauderdale need an airline that knows this market, and JetBlue is that airline," CEO Joanna Geraghty said during an investor call. The carrier confirmed it has secured 14 additional gates at FLL Terminal 3 β€” many of them previously occupied by Spirit aircraft β€” and will base 18 additional Airbus A220-300 and A321neo aircraft at the airport.

The financial stakes are enormous. Spirit's shutdown removed an estimated 10.9 million annual seats from the US ultra-low-cost market and triggered a price spike that pushed average domestic fares 18% higher in May 2026, according to Hopper data. JetBlue is offering a status match for former Spirit Free Spirit Silver and Gold members and a complimentary TrueBlue Mosaic 1 trial for ex-Spirit customers who book three round-trips by August 31.

Industry analysts believe the move is as much about brand repositioning as it is about routes. JetBlue has spent the past year repositioning itself as a "premium leisure" carrier, with its Mint business class expanding to dozens of US-Caribbean and US-Latin routes. With Spirit gone, JetBlue's combination of low fares, free Wi-Fi, generous legroom, and lie-flat Mint suites positions it uniquely between the legacy carriers and the remaining ultra-low-cost operators Frontier and Allegiant.

Wall Street rewarded the announcement. JetBlue shares surged 9.4% in early trading on May 26, the carrier's biggest single-day gain in 14 months. Analysts at Bernstein raised their price target by $3 per share, citing "a once-in-a-decade opportunity to seize a key gateway from a failed competitor."
