The stretch from -100 to -200 came from two fuselage plugs — a ten-foot section ahead of the wing and another behind it — adding twenty feet of cabin and turning the 727 into a genuine mainline workhorse.
The JT8D and that S-duct center engine

From there the orders poured in. Variants beyond the passenger cabin
The 727 was more versatile than its passenger role suggests. The D.B. Cooper footnote
No 727 story is complete without its most famous quirk. The airplane had a rear ventral airstair that dropped down from beneath the tail, and in November 1971 a hijacker known as D.B. Cooper used it to parachute out of a 727 in flight with a ransom, then vanished — a case that remains unsolved. In the aftermath, a small aerodynamic device nicknamed the "Cooper vane" was fitted so the aft airstair could no longer be lowered while airborne. It is a strange piece of aviation lore permanently attached to an otherwise very serious workhorse.
Second life as a freighter — and a collector's icon
As two-engine jets with modern engines took over passenger routes, the 727's thirsty three-engine layout pushed it toward cargo work, where its rugged airframe and good short-field manners kept it earning for decades.
