Delta Air Lines Overhauls In-Flight Service: Cuts on Short Hauls, Upgrades on Mid-Range Routes

Delta Air Lines is implementing a sweeping overhaul of its in-flight food and beverage service beginning May 19, 2026, in a move that will eliminate cabin service on approximately 450 daily short-haul flights while simultaneously upgrading offerings on 600 mid-range routes. The changes reflect a practical rethinking of what cabin crews can realistically deliver during the compressed service windows of America's shortest flights.

Under the new policy, flights covering fewer than 350 miles will no longer offer any food or drink service in economy class. The affected routes include popular corridors such as Los Angeles to San Francisco, New York LaGuardia to Boston, and Chicago to Detroit. Delta's rationale is straightforward: on these flights, the window between the seatbelt sign turning off after takeoff and the beginning of descent preparation can be as short as 15 minutes β€” barely enough time for flight attendants to move a beverage cart through the cabin.

In exchange, approximately 600 daily flights that previously received only a limited express drink service will be upgraded to full snack and beverage offerings. The net effect, according to Delta, is a more consistent and higher-quality experience across its domestic network.

The service changes come alongside a notable increase in checked baggage fees. As of May 2026, Delta has raised the cost of a first checked bag from $35 to $45 and a second bag to the same price. The third checked bag now carries a $200 fee, a sharp increase from the previous $50 charge.

On the positive side for employees, Delta has announced a four percent pay raise for eligible staff worldwide β€” a significant investment as the airline navigates ongoing industry pressures. However, operational challenges persist: the carrier was forced to cancel nearly 400 flights over a two-day period in early May due to crew scheduling issues, even as competitor airlines reported zero cancellations during the same window.

Delta is also continuing its aggressive transatlantic expansion. The airline launched three new European routes in the first week of May: Boston to Madrid, Seattle to Rome, and Seattle to Barcelona β€” all beginning service on May 6-7, 2026. These additions strengthen Delta's position as one of the largest transatlantic carriers and reflect sustained demand for U.S.-Europe travel.

The combination of service recalibration, fee increases, employee investment, and international expansion paints a picture of an airline making deliberate tradeoffs to position itself for long-term competitiveness β€” even if some of those tradeoffs may frustrate domestic travelers on the shortest routes.
