Finnair Raises Its 2026 Profit Guidance as Travel Demand Outpaces High Fuel Costs

Finnair has raised its full-year 2026 guidance after air travel demand proved stronger than expected, even as high fuel prices continue to weigh on the industry. In a positive profit warning published on October 13, 2026, the Helsinki-based oneworld carrier said it now expects revenue of €3.5 billion to €3.6 billion and a comparable operating result of €175 million to €220 million for the year.

The new numbers

The upgrade is significant. When Finnair published its half-year report on July 22, it guided for revenue of €3.4 billion to €3.5 billion and a comparable operating result of €120 million to €190 million. The new range lifts the midpoint of the profit forecast from €155 million to about €197.5 million.

Finnair also released preliminary, unaudited figures for the third quarter. Revenue for July to September is expected to be about €953 million, up from €834.9 million a year earlier, and the comparable operating result about €84 million, up from €50.7 million. The full interim report for January to September is due on October 27, 2026.

Why demand beat expectations

The airline said demand has continued to be stronger than previously anticipated, even though the impact of high fuel costs has partly been passed on to ticket prices. In other words, passengers have kept booking despite higher fares. Finnair added that it has successfully capitalised on market opportunities and that the implementation of its strategy has progressed well.

The traffic data supports that picture. Finnair said earlier this month that it carried about 1.1 million passengers in September, with traffic on its North Atlantic routes up sharply year on year, as the carrier continues to rebuild and grow its network between Europe, North America and Asia from its Helsinki hub.

Fuel remains the big unknown

Finnair was careful not to declare victory on costs. It said that although the market has remained strong so far, the high fuel price and the uncertainty over how it develops are expected to make it difficult to increase its fuel hedging for 2027 from current levels. Inflation and interest rates were listed as other uncertainties. The airline will publish its outlook and guidance for 2027 together with its full-year 2026 financial statements.

That caution reflects a difficult year across the sector. Delta Air Lines recently cut its 2026 profit outlook because of about $6 billion in extra fuel costs, easyJet has trimmed its winter schedule to contain fuel costs, and Baltic neighbour airBaltic has reported heavy losses driven largely by fuel. Against that backdrop, Finnair's upgrade stands out as one of the more positive updates from a European network airline this autumn.

What it means for the fleet and network

Finnair's long-haul operation is built around its Airbus A350-900 and A330 widebodies, which fly its routes to North America and Asia, while a mix of Airbus narrowbodies and regional aircraft feed the Helsinki hub from across Europe and the Nordic region. Stronger earnings give the airline more room to manage fuel volatility and to keep investing in its network and product.

The airline describes itself as a network carrier connecting passenger and cargo traffic between Asia, North America and Europe, and it is the only airline with daily year-round direct flights to Lapland, a market that peaks in the winter season now beginning.

What to watch

The October 27 interim report will give the full breakdown behind the stronger third quarter, including unit revenue, costs and traffic by region. Investors will also watch for any early signals on 2027 capacity and on how much of next year's fuel bill Finnair has been able to hedge.
